SH2OTAGE

SH₂ORTAGE

Branding and Art Direction

SH₂OTAGE is a public awareness initiative created to bring attention to the ongoing drought affecting Southern California and inspire more mindful water consumption. The campaign aims to make water scarcity tangible and relevant to everyday life, encouraging people to recognize the impact of drought and take meaningful steps toward conservation.

At the heart of the visual identity is a clever typographic treatment that incorporates H₂O directly into the SH₂OTAGE wordmark. By embedding the chemical formula for water into the word itself, the logo immediately communicates the campaign’s central message: a shortage of one of our most essential resources. The concept is simple, memorable, and visually engaging, turning the name into an instant conversation starter.

Oversized water droplets serve as a central graphic element throughout the campaign. Used to highlight, magnify, and frame key details, the droplets draw attention to the importance of every drop while creating a striking visual contrast between the abundance of water we often take for granted and the scarcity experienced during drought. Their scale reinforces the urgency of the issue, making water itself the focal point of the visual narrative.

Photography grounds the campaign in the realities of Southern California’s environment and everyday water use. Dry landscapes, parched terrain, and cracked earth evoke the harsh conditions of drought, creating a visual connection to the region’s vulnerability to water scarcity. In contrast, images of people interacting with water through faucets, showers, and reusable water bottles bring the issue into daily life. These familiar moments demonstrate how water consumption is woven into routine behaviors and provide an opportunity to encourage more conscious choices.

Together, the bold typography, magnified water droplets, and contrasting imagery create an art direction that balances urgency with accessibility. By combining the environmental consequences of drought with relatable moments of everyday water use, SH₂OTAGE transforms a complex regional challenge into a clear, compelling visual message, reminding audiences that every drop counts and that individual actions can contribute to a more sustainable future.
