Hello

I’m Nichol, a creative professional with over 10 years of experience specializing in art direction, branding, and design.

Throughout my career, I’ve had the opportunity to work across a wide range of industries and creative environments, from my years in the tech world at HubSpot to projects for independently small businesses. Working across such a diverse range of brands has taught me to approach every project with curiosity and flexibility, developing visual languages that feel authentic to the audience, the product, and the people behind them.

My approach to art direction is rooted in both creative exploration and strategic thinking. I enjoy building art directions from the ground up, establishing a distinctive visual identity through concept, color, typography, imagery, and composition. I also love the challenge of developing fresh, distinct art directions within an established brand, finding ways to push creative boundaries while remaining true to the larger visual identity. Whether creating something entirely new or expanding an existing system, I aim to strike a balance between originality, consistency, and purpose.

I believe great art direction should do more than look good, it should empower others to bring it to life. That’s why I enjoy developing visual systems, guidelines, and thoughtfully designed templates that make creative direction accessible to the teams using them. By translating a creative vision into flexible, easy-to-use tools, I help teams produce cohesive, on-brand work independently while maintaining the integrity and personality of the original direction.

Any product, service, or company can, and should, be beautifully designed. Good design isn’t just about making something look polished, it’s about creating a visual identity that communicates clearly, connects with people, and gives a brand a distinct point of view.

Creativity isn’t limited to my professional life, it’s woven into nearly everything I do. Outside of design I tap dance, paint with acrylics and watercolor, and dabble in underwater and macro photography. These creative pursuits continually influence the way I see the world, giving me new ways to explore composition, color, movement, texture, and storytelling.

Whether I’m shaping a brand from the ground up, developing a visual system, directing a campaign, or creating tools that help others bring a creative vision to life, I’m always looking for ways to make the work both beautiful and meaningful.

I’m based in San Diego, CA, and currently available for freelance projects and full-time opportunities.
